Dear Editor:

The Postal Service has been looking for ways to reduce its costs as its use by the public decreases. A saving method that I have not seen discussed is to require home owners to put up a curb side mail box to be used instead of the door slot or door side box, which require a walking letter carrier. Current walking carriers in my neighborhood, as reported in my neighborhood blog, are rushed and often leave the mail on the front steps instead of the mail slot or box. A curb box would not work in high crime areas but there are plenty of areas where it would. Large packages would still require some walking.

My rough estimate is that the mail truck based delivery is 3-4 times as fast as the walking method. Further, the truck method would reduce injuries due to dogs and slippery walks/stairs.

Sincerely yours,
